I have a cold, so I thought today would be a good day to
start my bridesmaid shrug.
It’s been ages since I’ve knit anything, so jumping back in with a garment may not have been genius.

Anyway – here’s proof -this is from a post in October, 2004. My bangs are stringy, but that shawl is kinda bangin!

So, Chicago and I had our first fight and it was about the winter. It is entirely too fucking cold to exist. Monday was fine… 30 degrees or so, no problem for my Utahn ass, but by Thursday all 7 degree (wind chill -13) hell broke loose and if I hadn’t been lit on expensive tequila, I might have died of hypothermia on the corner of Rush and Superior. Friday was the first non-10-hour work day we had, but it was too old to do much of anything. We took shelter in the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Gap. It was literally too much.

It’s a bit extravagant for me – I struggle thinking about spending more than 15 bucks on any one clothing item. I’m a freak and a cheapskate, but, I thought, a) I love Beth Ditto and her body-positive kick-assery b) Black and white polk-dots with a peter-pan collar….helllooooo! c) I deserve a little treat.

Even if that treat comes with a conversion rate. Damn you, American dollar!!!

I spent the day rearranging and cleaning my horrible house, readying it for some of my favorite women in the world. Tomorrow my momma, sister, granny and 3 cousins come to visit and I couldn’t be more over-the-moon about it.

First of all, this means I’m on vacation – something I’ve desperately needed….and secondly, that I’ll be surrounded by wonderful women that crack me up and that I love desperately.

We have several activities planned and I’ll do my best to post pictures and tell you all the haps. I’m recommitting. Did you catch that?

Once my family leaves, I’ll have 5 whole days of laziness before jetting back to Chicago for a week.

I want to be upset about it. Honestly, I’ve traveled more since January than in the past 10 years. It’s crazy. But, anyway – I’m not upset, mostly because I am without an ounce of hesitation – IN LOVE with Chicago.

I’ve never really loved a city like this before. I liked Seattle, Portland, San Francisco – sure – but, I want to make sweet love to Chicago – on the first date.

So – I’m excited. We’re staying downtown this time and while this means an hour commute in the mornings – I think it will be a much better experience and much less exhausting. We’re staying at this insanely pretty and old Hilton on Michigan Ave. It’s by the Field museum and the aquarium. Sigh.

The weekend was interesting, mostly due to my cousin’s (now ex) boyfriend. And when I say interesting, ladies and gentlemen, I mean mouth-agape, Twilight Zone, Is this really happening? type interesting. Not, oh! He regaled us with tales of his journeys in the West Indies kind of interesting. He was rude to my cousin, mean to the baby, horrible to our dogs, mildly aggressive toward everyone, flippantly racist and worst of all (wink) he drank my $30 bottle of gin while. we. slept! The horror.

The saving grace during his presence was his inability to remember his own gargantuan, freak-height while passing beneath the low-ish door frame in our mudroom. Each delicious crack to the skull, a tiny bit of proof that God exists.

“Goddammit! Motherfucker! Son of a BITCH!!!….FUCK!!!” he’d bellow – time and time and time times 12 (at least).

It’s probably sick, but I happen to know that all Brewers, Medleys and Kundes were secretly laughing their asses off.

My family is wonderful. Good riddance, d-bag!

So exciting. Not only is she gorgeous and talented (in like a bazillion ways), but she’s also one of the nicest people in the world.

I mean, we all know what a geekball I was for this show before I knew someone in the cast, so – I can only imagine that I’m going to be a total nightmare come June.

I will do it, though – word of honor.

I have burst into tears (hopefully unnoticed) no less than 6 times this week. No sobbing or actual weeping, just that moment when your eyes start to bulge and feel like they’re on fire and your throat swells and aches. The kind of tears you can stuff back into your face.

I’m trying to hold it together, but I can totally feel my breaking point approaching. Something has got to change or something has got to give.

In preparation for very weighty and frightening conversations I’m going to have in the near future, I’m reading two very important books by ladies who know how to get what they want!

I just got teary thinking about how I’d like to contribute to the Bikini Kill archive blog. It’s major cheese to think and to say, but from the moment I heard the words, “We’re Bikini Kill and we want revolution, girl style now!” my life was different. I always knew I was a feminist, but I never acted like one until I learned about Riot Grrl….and I’m so grateful! So grateful, that they had the courage to put themselves out there and open themselves up to bitter ridicule from “the haters” – so that a gazillion girls like me could learn to do the same.

To wit, Chubby Bunny and U.G.G.L.I.E.S. were born.

Someday I’ll tell you the story about how the feeeemale editor of SLUG magazine killed the burgeoning feminist music scene in Salt Lake. Or at least killed my will to help lead it.

Full, embarrassing disclosure: I paint my nails about 3 times a week. It is the childless woman’s burden to have this kind of time on my hands, literally – I know. Whatever. As Bobby Brown would say, “it’s my prerogative.” I have somewhere around 80 or so polishes currently in my collection and just to be all environmental and shit…. I’ve been using my discards (the colors that either look stupid against my weird skin or just didn’t live up to their internet-swatch promises) to “franken” my own creations. I read no less than 6 nail polish blogs on the regular and I know. I know I’m nuts.

And from there…. sweet mother! Purples, blues, reds, silvers, glitters, vampy, neon, matte…. I cannot be deterred. I love them all. I even bought yellow. Of my own free will.

It’s part meditation – part art – part color therapy. Nail polish. Who knew?

1. Buy hovercraft. This might prove difficult given that most of our great minds are working on yet, still more drugs to give a bunch of gray-balled, ol’ bastards 10-hour erections. But, I’m putting it out there anyway.

2. No more fake laughing at unfunny jokes by jerky people, just to fill uncomfortable silence or make them feel better. I will still fake laugh for nice people. I know, I’m a softy.

3. Fix up the back rooms in my house. Uggggggghhhhhhhh infinity.

4. Write an episode of Law & Order SVU. I know they don’t take unsolicited material, but whatever. Suck it, Wolf. I’m going to use the word “Semen” 97 times before the theme song.

5. Stop trying to be nice to our dick neighbor. He’s a dick. He does not deserve my forced smiles or attempts at eye contact.

6. Get a record player.

7. Play actual music in addition to infinity hours of Rock Band on the Wii.

8. Figure out how to block death metal on said Wii game.

9. Watch all of Six Feet Under and Oz and every D’onofrio episode of Criminal Intent.

10. Find and hug Vincent D’onofrio. Ask him if I can keep him in my pocket.

11. Try to go to bed before 2 am.

12. Exercise in some way every stupid day.

13. Buy an insane amount of nail polish. What? It makes me happy.

14. Make some stuff. Do some stuff. Go some places.

15. Watch a lot of Youtube Boner Jams!

16. Learn some magics and black arts.

17. Not ever – even after this year take a bath with John Lithgow.

Embrace may be strong, but I’ve definitely gotten used to it and I definitely like feeling stronger and like my heart isn’t going to explode when I walk up 3 flights of stairs.

All that said, today I experienced something that can only be described with horror and dismay. While changing in the locker room I saw something I can never unsee. I saw an elderly woman’s hoo-ha in unparalleled detail. She took off her pants and plopped down on a stool in front of me. Wha? Wha??! Why? Why did she put her nekkid, sweaty fanny on the stool and why did she try to carry on a conversation with me with her vag in my face?

It was kind of surreal.

The thing is…I don’t get it. As teen fantasies go, Edward Cullen is just so lame. I mean, Robert Pattison is certainly cute, but Edward Cullen the character is just such a jagweed. He’s bossy, whiney, manipulative, suicidal and boring. He and Bella (who is an even douch-ier character) do little more than stare at each other with the distinct look of impending diarrhea on their faces. Neither of them are particularly nice or smart or interesting in any way – and yet – this afternoon I found myself at the theatre watching New Moon and despite all the shushing, laughing my ass off.

Full disclosure – I’ve never read the books. I tried once, but found myself getting increasingly annoyed that I didn’t think to change the object of my early college diaries into a vampire , so I could publish them unedited and make a gozillion dollars.

About half-way through the movie – sometime between Angie’s crack about Daddy Cullen looking just like Joseph Smith and me finishing Edwards part for him:

Edward to Bella: I don’t want you to come.

Me: Literally!

-the two GROWN MEN in front of us got up and moved, the angrier of the two saying, “Well, I didn’t know this was a comedy.”

I felt bad for about a second. I mean, I HATE people that ruin my movie-going experience, but really dude? You’re watching a movie in which a vampire’s floating head dispenses advice to the INSANE, fatal attraction-like heroine. A FLOATING HEAD. Even if you love Twilight, you have to admit that’s kind of funny. Right? I mean, am I right?

I’ve posted pictures of our hardly never-used back room before, so I’ll spare you again – but, it’s safe to say that despite several attempts, it has remained “that room” since 2007. You know the room of which I speak – the room where all of your mystifyingly sentimental, but useless belongings go.

In our case we’re talking:

Over the summer, while Lars was away I actually threw out an entire garbage bag full of my tapes, in my first and last unsuccessful attempt to “spring clean” over the summer. So you can only imagine my surprise at the mass of shit we still have left.

You probably don’t think it’s normal to get misty at the thought of getting rid of Ice Cream Man or Stepfather or Hospital Massacre…. but, here we sit, debating over each boxed and battered treasure.

*As a side note: I finally got my laptop back. Macdocs ended up sending Omar back to Apple where they replaced the logic board, both fans, the top case and the keyboard. It seems to be working, now that it’s an entirely different computer. Literally the only original piece of Omar left at this point is the battery. It seems to be working okay for now, but I’m not holding my breath.

I’ve been trying to add all of my software and configure everything the way I had it before, but I’m kind of avoiding it too. I been burned, baby. I been burned.

I’m not going to make excuses for myself, other than to say I just haven’t felt very interesting. I don’t mean that in a self-deprecating way, because lots of interesting things have been happening, I just haven’t felt very “story-telly”/ entertainy, etc… Like, I would have told everything all wrong and all boring.

Whatever. That’s enough of that. I’m back and I’ve committed to just puking out whatever comes to mind – EVERY DAY.

Anyway – I found THE SINGLE MOST WONDERFUL TIME WASTER IN THE WORLD —- it’s on the InStyle website and it’s a highly sophisticated  ”makeover” program that allows you to try on Hollywood hair cuts, styles, colors and make up! It’s a little slow, but for how creepily customized and wonderful the results are, it’s well worth the buggies.

You basically upload a photo of yourself (from dead on is best) and then play dress up with your face. You can try on Michelle Obama’s hair or Tyra… or Kate Winslet…anyone really. You can also change up and customize colors and makeup. It’s like my girliest dreams come true.

Anyway – so here are some of the looks I got. Some of them are actually kind of cute and some are downright vile (Angelina Jolie head, I’m looking at you). Anyway – I think you should vote on cuts and color. Listen, it’s something to do.

He sent me a short email last night and then I pathetically stayed online for 7 hours (yes, until 4am) hoping he would come back. It was so sad.

This morning, I woke up early-ish (for going to sleep at 4) and I finally caught him, but then – his Skype wouldn’t work – which is really freaking me out because it was working fine when he was still in D.C.

We got about 15 lines off between us before (I think) his wi-fi cut out and that was an hour ago. I’m trying not to be a crybaby, but seriously – this is my life right now.

1. I don’t hear from Lars. Get teary.

2. I do hear from Lars. Get teary.

3. Finally remember to eat something. Get teary.

4. Hang out with one of my amazing and wonderful friends, have a great time; forget that I’m sad.

It really wasn’t this bad when we were still able to talk with some regularity, but this sucks. So far – here’s what I know:

Lars’ plane plane landed safely and Wi-fi at his hotel (hopefully, it’s just the hotel) licks balls. That’s it.

Turns out he has a week long break in the middle of July. Wtf?

Anyone have $1600 they want to lend me for a flight to Delhi? Eh? Eh? You know you do, you richies. Sigh. Why isn’t there a cool-wife scholarship? I ask you.

I’m watching a “webinar” for work about “web 2.0.” It’s kind of making me want to be “dead 2.0.”

Not really – not really. I don’t want to be one of those people who blogs something flip about death and then gets hit by a car or dies in some freak swimming accident or something.

I’m seeing spots. Orangey-pinky type spots. Painting is truly the most exhausting chore in the universe . The thing is – when you live in a shit-hole like we do… (you saw that before picture, right?) – painting is kind of your life. After the huge, front living room/ master bedroom remodel of 2007, I wasn’t sure I’d ever be in the mood to paint again, but alas the mildew fumes made that decision for me….and despite my achey back, arms, hands and brain it was totally worth it.

Not that it’s over. I still have to paint the door and do some touch ups, but the over all vibe  of our house has improved. It’s so nice to walk into a glowing, clean bathroom.

Sigh. I really want to write more, but my brain is absolute mush. Sorry guys.

A year and a half later, Lars and I have officially started another home improvement project.

I’m sitting outside of the bathroom like a d-bag with Lars’ miniature computer propped on top of the paint can. That’s what he gets for leaving me for the summer, right? I mean, can I get an Amen?

Right now there are only a few items up and really only one that I’m totally proud of, but look for more of my junk and Angie’s cute stuff very soon…and please keep us in mind for all your “cute bags” and “invites/announcements” needs.

In three weeks Lars leaves for India and I am officially freaking out.

There’s so much to do and be done. So much money to worry about and save. So much anxiety about how much and how often we’ll be able to communicate for two and a half months.

The Subaru’s $535 blow didn’t help matters – In fact, it’s exactly the catalyst that threw me into this state of distress.

What will I do if the power blows? Our fuse box is nestled precisely 6 ft above an open stairwell in the basement. I’ve never been able to reach it.

How will I reach all of the stuff on the tops of our kitchen shelves?

How will I fall asleep at night?

If I make inappropriate cracks at the television and Lars isn’t there to hear them – will they make a sound?

Who will leave their stupid socks and their stupid shoes all over the place, so I almost fall and break my neck every day?

Etc. Etc. Etc.

To say I knew what I was getting into when I said, “Totally – go for it! Apply! It would be such a great experience” would be a lie – I still don’t know what I’ve gotten into. But, who would I be if I held back the person I love?

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Fuck a duck.

I think, in fact that I’ve discovered the next “hipster grifter.”

First of all, I’m not in the habit of recording people’s private conversations, but this kid’s voice was not to be believed and I wanted proof to back up the impression that I will be doing of him for like ever.

But, if you listen carefully, you’ll hear “dude A” totally try to grift his friend out of 3300 bucks. Supposedly his dad’s friend, the “accountant” just didn’t mail in his taxes last year…and when he brought this supposed fact up to his dad, his dad said, “Whoa, that sucks, dude.”

Anyway – he’s trying to get his buddy to lend him the money (by tomorrow) because the IRS wants it like “right now.” He wants his friend to take his “sweet bike” as collateral….and his friend can check the Blue Book value, but he should know that the Blue Book lies.

Uh huh.

Anyway – even if you don’t care to listen to the weird shit this kid is spinning, you MUST hear him spew. It’s wonderful.

I have broken out of work and am more than a bit contentedly sitting outside, at a quiet table in front of a coffee shop, enjoying smallish, but yummy iced tea and feeling tiny beads of sweat break and slide down the middle of my back.

It’s kind of blissful if you want to know the truth.

I can’t see my screen very well – but, there’s just something, I dunno – amazing about connecting to the outside world, while so privately and remotely situated physically.

The sound of my keys clicking and the reflection of my stumpy little fingers buzzing away – reflected in front of me, seem absolutely foreign and delicious.

Times like these, for me used to be spent scribbling in stupid diaries I hoped no one would see, but, of course …they did.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the nature of blogs and their undeniable silliness. I mean, how can anyone take public journaling …about themselves seriously? But, you know what? I kind of do.

Thinking back to those stupid diaries – I’ve always been a blogger. My friends and I would scribble away in private moments, only to huddle later and trade our retellings of the same story. We would try to make our entries as entertaining as possible, each new tale upstaging the last in it’s grandiosity and ridiculousness.

Inane entries were rightly ridiculed as boring and lame…and so, we tried not to write them.

Eventually our little pre-”blog” blog club fell apart – as all “clubs” do. I mean, when girls who used to pass you their journal like it was an issue of Glamour , suddenly become secretive and paranoid, you start to wonder.

What is she hiding anyway? So, you naturally start hiding yours and writing about what you think she must be writing about what you’re writing about.

It went on like this for a whole summer. With lines drawn and confidences broken, the inevitable happened. Everyone started trying to find and read the now “secret” diaries of everyone else.

It started with my roommate, Summer. She left hers out on her bed, open – to a page with my name on it. So, duh.

“I’ve read Tracy’s, but there was nothing there. She must have another book. She HAS to be writing about me SOMEWHERE!”

I always wonder what my early twenties would have been like with all our current technologies and possibilities and 10,000 new ways available to humiliate ourselves. I wonder if I would have been more or less cool. More or less understood and understandable. More or less able to openly and honestly communicate with my peers and crushes.

Or would I have been the same, lame cypher of a twentysomething, leaving vegetables in people’s mailboxes? Probably. But, at least those people could read why I would do such a thing…like, totally on my Facebook page.

In the meantime, I’ll start working on the Honeycakes site, as well as a shopsite for my friend Crafty Shannon. Woo hoo.

This recent case of writer’s block has been as crippling as Bret Michaels’ head is bald.

I really have missed writing and sharing random shite so I’ve made some goals for myself. I’m promising here and now that for the next month there will be some sort of new content at least 5 days a week.

1. “What’s your favorite perfume?” During a time of particular and acute desperation Tawnya and I were sucked into the most bizarre of pyramid scams – the, Hey! Let’s get some crack-heads to sell our shitty, knock-off “perfumes” to lonely, old cat-ladies in the Smith’s parking lot, scam. It was 1995, I think.

2. “If you wanna pay more, go next door!” – “Whatta ya’ gonna holla, every thing’s a dollar!!!! Working at a dollar store, in a wafer-thin polo shirt tucked into polyester pants was humiliating on more levels than I care to recount.

3. A tie for every job I had while living in West Yellowstone, Montana. Cleaning hotel rooms (blech!), waiting tables, selling ugly pottery and knives, slinging pizza, –I should have just given blow-jobs to Montana hobos – it would have been less cruel to my dignity.

4. McDonalds. After getting kicked out of Ricks for “not being a rat,” and getting sucky grades my mother decided the best punishment would be to get me a job at McDonalds. Thanks mom.

5. Parking attendant at the Crossroads Mall. I would like to lament the fact that the city has decided to tear down the site where I first developed lung cancer, but I won’t.

6. My 3am – noon shift at Key Bank processing food stamps. Have you ever read or seen the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas? Well, that’s what it’s like working a 3 am shift while going to school full time.

7. Bar Wench at the Silver Horse Shoe in St. Anthony, Idaho. I shouldn’t have to explain why drunken, Mormon, farm-coots grabbing my 18-year old ass on a nightly basis was annoying.

1. Wales. Any country that that can cram 15 consonants into every word is alright by me. Plus, it looks like it’s made of magic.

2. Japan. Not just because CUTE was born there or because I’ve seen Lost in Translation one too many times. Eh, nevermind – it is because CUTE was born there, but also because they makes kid’s books that look like this:

I’m too tired to go into all the reasoning behind making the move, but most of it can be chalked up to “design control.” Blogger’s move to the more user-friendly/ “gooey” interface made it nearly impossible to tinker with the code or page design… and as you all know – I love to tinker. Tinkering, in fact, pays the bills these days – so, suffice it to say – I’ve moved in order to impose my free, creative will upon this here weblog.

And anyway – change is good. It’s like spring cleaning.

Can’t sleep. Lars is in Vernal on a river trip with a couple of his clients. It’s funny how you forget how to sleep on your own. A few years ago I read an interesting book about the physical/ chemical/ physiological aspects of love. It’s main thesis: that our bodies actually become biochemically connected – just spending time together, touching.

I have no idea if that’s true, but I still can’t fall asleep.

I think the Throwing Muses said it better than I could.

The bright, aqua blue elicited enthusiasm from the check-out girl at the Emigration Market. The shimmering purple caused an elderly woman in a wheelchair to grab my left hand and hold it for about 3 minutes while telling me all about her daughter who now lives in New Jersey.

Painted nails make me want to point things out to people. Both literal things and figurative. “Have you ever noticed this sign before? Aren’t the colors lovely? Isn’t the font nice?”

I’ll point with my short, purple-painted nail on my stubby, outstretched finger and we’ll all look up together.

My friend Melissa is still in Japan and while I’m seething with envy, I want her to come home. Is that selfish? Yargh.

The Oliver Twist whom this post is directed at is someone I sort of loosely work with…more work around. Anyway, as per usual I cannot get into too many details. Let’s just say, it is a bitch and it must die.

I finally fixed the masthead. It’s not the glorious (I almost typed “glory hole” – I really have to leave work now) banner I promised, but it’s cute enough for now and it makes me laugh…and I made it happen. I designed some web. What is it they say about bringing your work home?

Web developing is going well. Maybe even too well. I’m so happy- I’m scaring myself. I LOVE, LOVE my boss. She’s an amazing woman who makes me laugh and is inspiring and caring and – I could go on, but it would be gross. She actually said to me, “Tracy, when are you going to have a baby? I just love babies” while we were at a co-workers baby shower. Uhh… When is the last time a boss begged their employee to get knocked-up and take a bunch of time off work? It really sums up how wonderful she is – and I have to say, soothed any fears I may have had about getting P.G. while in the honeymoon stage of a new job (should that happen).

“A whole new world….a whole new place to – ” Oh, sorry- Aladdin attack.

It will be the Peaches & Cream Barbie of mastheads.
