Repost from Facebook – Re: National Health care Debate
I currently have extremely great health insurance. I’m lucky – but, even with what I have, there are problems.
Getting our “fantastic” insurance company to pay Lars’ hospital bills was like pulling teeth. 2 years later, we’re still trying to parse out what they should cover, failed to cover, refused to cover, the list goes on and on…
In my opinion, this bill doesn’t go far enough. Ethically – I believe that health care is a basic, human right and it’s a travesty that this debate is getting overshadowed by the misinformation and fear of a very small and (I’m sorry) culturally and intellectually backward minority who allow themselves to be played and used by those with clearly defined financial interests in maintaining the status quo.
That isn’t to say you can’t disagree with the current bill as it stands, but if you’re taking marching orders from a group of people saying things like, “Well, if Stephen Hawking were born in the UK, they would have put him before a death panel” – then, I’m sorry – I would willingly pay higher taxes to get you the mental health care and education you so desperately need. (**I don’t believe for a second that the people who are opposed to National Health care even give a crap about Stephen Hawking…or anyone like him – because they’re the same people voting against providing care for the disabled.)
This isn’t about left or right. It’s about taking care of our citizens and not being vile, self-centered, myopic creeps.
For my nerd pals I offer a quote from Torchwood:
“An injury to one is an injury to all.” – Cpt. Jack Harkness
And for Christian detractors of health care reform, I offer this:
“And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”
Mathew 25:40
A quick one while he’s away
Only 4 days until my sweetheart is home.
I’m excited. Elated. Unbelievably ecstatic. I can’t believe both how quickly the time has flown (now that it’s almost over – I had a completely different take a month ago) and how slowly it’s dragged on.
One thing is certain – I would not have made it through this without the help, love and entertainment from my friends.
But, there’s another group of people I have to thank – and yes, tv people – I’m talking about you.
The Jewel in the Crown, of course – 1984 BBC television event – based on Paul Scott’s Raj Quartet. Daphne, Sarah, Guy and Hari – I couldn’t have done this without you.
Torchwood.
You bastards. I’m still angry with you for making me feel human emotions.
Capt. Jack, Gwen, Ianto, Rhys. I love you guys.
Mad Men. You fucking bastards. I love you all like people. Every bloody one of you. Even you, Pete. You fucker.
And last, but not least – my beloved True Blood. You snuck up on me earlier this year. I wanted to hate you, I really did – but, no, you had to make me drink your blood and become unnaturally attracted to you. Dammit. I love you so.
Bill – I love how you always deliver one line in such a way as to make iced tea spew forth from my nose.
For instance:
Lafayette and Jason- well, duh. I love you for everything.
Jessica, Hoyt, Sam, Arlene, Terry, Tara, Sookie, Steve…. I want to give you all big, gigantic hugs.
Eric – well, now Eric. It’s best I keep my feelings for you private. Eh hem.
Seriously True Blood, I love you – even if you’ve turned me into yet another “Vampire” loving, wannabe fangbanger. Sigh.
I owe you all so much for making me laugh, cry, worry and obsess about something other than my best friend being thousands of miles away. I owe you, like big time.
The Tide is High
When I was a little girl I was obsessed with Star Trek. Straight up. I was IN LOVE with Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock and Bones. I would pretend (and this is probably delving way too deeply into my psychology) that I was Bones’ daughter, visiting the Enterprise and falling in a mad-sexy love triangle with Kirk and Spock.
One particularly regular theme I would play out, involved singing Blondie’s, The Tide is High to Captain Kirk.
I would stick the 7″ onto my Mickey Mouse turntable and sing my heart out to William Shatner.
Last weekend I attended my very first Star Trek convention and …wow.
There they were – my once true loves, standing before me – older than dirt and sweeter than pie.
I’m not ashamed to admit that I got teary at one point. Whatever. I’m okay with it.

I mean, really…
The church bulletins are a bit problematic, partly because they are typeset (the ones I remember were mimeographed). Palatino (1950) existed, but didn’t really catch on in popularity in the U.S. until around 1970. And Snell Roundhand (1966) is definitely premature. This feels more like desktop publishing than early Sixties ephemera.
